Resonant Lighbox

Resonant lightbox

„Resonant lightbox“ is a site-specific work by the artists Katya Cheng and Georgi Tomov Georgiev, developed for the project „SREDA“and installed on the crossroads bridge of „Madrid“ Blvd. and „Evlogi and Hristo Georgievi“ Blvd. The installation contains an iridescent artefact made of recycled glass that is animated by the vibrations in the immediate environment.

After a conversation between the artists and the representatives of the Oborishte municipality, a decision was reached to develop a work as part of the renovation project for the pedestrian area of the bridge on „Madrid“ Blvd.

The artists identify the bridge as a transit point that connects people crossing the Perlovska River. A place that is filled with the hectic chaos of passing cars, trams, buses and pedestrians. Each participant in this complex system creates vibrations that make up the auditory background of the place. These vibrations gently animate the glass artifact. As it moves, the iridescent glass sparkles with rainbow colors, capturing sunlight and artificial light. The passing pedestrian, stealing a glance at the artwork, will have the opportunity to realize the totality of the movement in the immediate environment, reflected on the slightly vibrating glass artifact.
The installation aims to illustrate how each person shapes and influences the urban environment.

The glass artifact is made from pieces of recycled glass collected in the area of „Madrid“ blvd. by children living in the city of Sofia. The work with children aims to demonstrate the possibility of environmental engagement and recycling, and at the same time, provide an opportunity for the children to participate in the creation of the piece.
The body of the work was developed jointly with the Sofia company Neona.

Katya Cheng (Cheng Hsiao Ching) is a Berlin-based Taiwanese designer and artist. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design from Shih Chien University in Taiwan, she worked as a product designer for a couple of years. She continued with a master’s degree at Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin, focusing on material and surface design.
Katya’s work includes spatial-installation design, light-interactive design, and craft-related design with optical properties.
Her practice develops on the intersection of fantasy and reality through the interplay of light and matter, spatial installations, and craft-related design projects. She explores the scientific aspects of magic as well as the poetic aspects of technique. "Butterfly Dreams"—a tale in eastern philosophy—and the concept of magic are constant inspirations for her. They are the embodiment of her curiosity and her spirit of creation. She extracts poetic imageries from natural phenomena, mythology, and magic to determine the optical properties of materials and structural surfaces in her work. She imbues the artistic conception of magic into living space, provoking the viewer to step over the misty boundary between fantasy and reality.

Georgi Tomov Georgiev was born in Sofia in 1983. He graduated Sound Studies & Sonic Arts at the Universität der Künste Berlin. Georgi creates experiences through installation, sculpture, music. Born in Sofia, his cultural upbringing is balanced on a thin string separating east and west, keen to both but not belonging to either. Merging this dichotomy into a lucid identity is a source of perpetual movement animating in his practice. Working on a transnational level, he examines divergent histories to create a multidimensional perspective of reality. The consolidating element brings viewers out of assumed roles super-imposed by the status quo and facilitates planetary awareness.
Georgi works with ephemeral mediums – light and sound – and binds them to architectonic structures. His practice augments perception and reconstructs reality maintaining an idealism pertaining model of the world. Each piece calling for a critical and attentive mode of apprehension.
